Tricuspid valve Regurgitation (TR)
·The Tricuspid valve is a valve with three leaflets that is on the right side of the heart, between the right atrium and the right ventricle, which is closed when right ventricle contracts and prevent blood regurgitation from right ventricle to right atrium.
·Tricuspid valve Regurgitation (TR) is a disorder in which the heart’s Tricuspid valve does not close properly, causing blood to flow backward(leak) into the right atrium when the right ventricle contracts. The functional TR mainly occurs in the context of pulmonary hypertension, left-sided heart disease and leads to deformation of the right ventricle and the right atrium, which causes dilation of the tricuspid valve (TV) geometry.
·4.7 million and 2.5 million people in EU and U.S. respectively need treatment for TR, with an annual incidence of 331,000 and 217,000 respectively. However, approximately 10,000 of these patients in EU and U.S. respectively undergo surgery each year.
·Tricuspid valve disease has been evaluated to be somewhat less important for immediate treatment than other valve diseases (aortic valve, mitral valve) in the heart. However, clinical experience and numerous studies have shown that tricuspid valve failure significantly reduces the quality of life of patients and mortality due to diseases is also high. The mortality rate within one year for patients with severe or more TR is about 30%, and about 60% after three years.
·There is no catheter-based way to treat TR than open surgery for Tricuspid valve repair or replacement, however, due to the difficulty, high mortality and hesitation in conventional open sternotomy, the TR surgery rate stays low (less than 5%).
